The firm is accepting of remote work, especially as it is necessary to facilitate the expected working hours. the worst aspect of this job is the work life balance. compared to others at the firm, my working hours are modest but they still consistently exceed my contracted hours (including public holidays, weekends and working into the morning of the next day). hr and management frame your working hours as your responsibility, and instances of unsustainable working hours are treated as a personal failing by you to communicate with others, rather than a consequence of a business model that relies on overworking employees for its viability. this is not a controversial opinion, given that management pride themselves on running 'lean teams'. setting boundaries with respect to work life balance can put you at risk of interpersonal issues with some colleagues and criticism. this is because your colleagues are also dealing with heightened emotions due to the consistent fatigue and stress that comes from the hours expected of employees of this firm.
Sometimes the work hours are really bad, i.e. 9am until 10pm on average certain weeks, other times it's a lot better and you leave at a normal time. as a grad in my first rotiation the latest i've had to work until is 3:15am on a deal. i did not get time in lieu or extra pay for this.
We are given an allowance to set up our work from home space. my team has tuesdays and thursdays as work from home days, although we are encouraged to be in the office as much as possible. i have never been required to work past 5:30 but have chosen to stay/assist the team get things over the line.
