Work hours are reasonable. We are contracted to 8:30am - 5pm, and most of the time I do work those hours. I find I do stay overtime every once and a while if I'm helping someone with work that needs to be completed, but there is zero pressure to remain overtime, I find I want to remain anyways because I've developed good relationships with the people who I'm working with and I want to stay and help do my part. In the litigation team I found almost everyone came and did a welfare check to see what I was working on / ensure I wasn't staying later than I needed too. Working from home arrangements DC is very flexible with us needing to WFH if we have an appointment or are sick etc. Otherwise, their expectation is that we are in office as in the early stages of our career we learn based on others and its easier to learn being in person and being able to ask other lawyers questions in person, which is very reasonable in my opinion.
Not flexible however accommodations made for some circumstances.
I think seniors definitely prefer grads and juniors to be in the office as a general rule, but if you have stuff that means you need to be at home for a day, they are really good about accommodating that. Some more senior people also have dedicated working from home days or work 9 day fortnights, so I think the flexibility in terms of working arrangements increases as seniority does, but that makes sense to me as the best way of getting work as a grad is definitely by being in the office and getting to know people. In terms of the hours worked, people here usually worked 8:30 - 5:00, but if you need to start early to finish early, no one has a problem with that, same if you needed to start late and then worked later to make up the time.
Not super flexible, but I have not really pressed this. I like coming into the office.
As a graduate, hours and working arrangements are not very flexible without a good reason (e.g. illness, needing to attend appointments). I think this is largely due to the fact that grads often need to be visible to get consistent workflow, and so that there can be consistent supervision the majority of the time. However, I understand that as you progress there are more opportunities for flexibility and discussion around hours/remote working.
