We are an IT services company using the power of technology to build better futures for our customers, colleagues, environment and communities.
Feedback processes can feel limited at times due to busy workloads across teams, which may affect how frequently feedback is provided.
My team has been good at providing me opportunities to develop on the job. The graduate program itself was lacking in quality training - the bulk being hours of minimally beneficial personal development course videos (communication, leadership, teamwork) which felt like a waste of time recovering existing knowledge. There is coaching however my coach is often too busy to put much time into it.
As part of the grad programme, I completed the DXC learning courses assigned to us. Some of this was quite valuable, but the quality was very inconsistent and much of it felt overly basic or not related to my role. From my team, training has consisted of being given a list of general topics to study on DXC learning, but without much clarity or guidance. Once I got access to the work codebase, I was given time to explore the codebase and learn more about it, but also without clear goals or guidance. I was then assigned bugs to learn on the job and gain experience by doing work. I am aware that a big part of this is due to a lack of resources in my team to provide the time for direct guidance and training.
We have access to online training, but you cannot really substitute for learning by tackling the actual work challenges. Once you learn the basis of what we are using, e.g. JavaScript, C#, PL/SQL, and so on, you then just have to solve problems by using documentation, ChatGPT, and talking to coworkers.
