My day-to-day role involves managing projects though design and construction on behalf of Auckland transport. I work closely with my manager on a variety of interesting projects. I get good satisfaction from my work when I am kept busy.
Starting to become quite repetitive and a bit tedious, certainly had some of my autonomy and trust taken away recently - but that is part of being a grad is doing the admin work and the grunt stuff for a bit.
Daily coordination with Contractors, Consultants and the Client to help manage 30+ projects at a Wastewater Treatment plant. Governance reporting, and project planning including forecasting, programmes, registers, and presentations. A lot of procurement work through drafting approval forms and construction contracts to get projects moving. Weekly site inspections, and Quality Assurance review.
My day-to-day tasks change every day, thought recently I have been receiving increasingly more responsibility for tasks on my projects. It is no surprise that the beginning of the grad programme means the work will be less satisfying/meaningful as there is a lack of capability/knowledge. As my time at Frequency has passed and I've grown as a PM, the importance of tasks and increased responsibility have come with a heightened satisfaction in my work.
Throughout the graduate programme you will become further involved with higher level tasks, which allows for greater learning and development. Day to day tasks vary by project but over the course of the programme the tasks will develop from simpler assisting tasks to more direct lead role/management of stakeholders and projects. The easiest way to learn is to say yes to a task and if you make any mistakes, learn from them
