Each role will have its own development opportunities - Transpower has a lot of different software it uses, and I learnt some focused on asset management, but I saw other interns using software completely unfamiliar to me. There are structured training programs for these but you also just have to pick them up as you go along and ask for help, which people are always willing to give. Other structured development comes in the form of the intern project, which gives people the chance to practice leadership by running it, or public speaking by volunteering to present - I was a presenter, but you do have to actively take these opportunities. The more you put in, the more you get out, which is cliche but true
Information sessions were scheduled for all interns to expose us to company work beyond our roles. We are assigned a young professional buddy who guides us through general workplace tasks, as well as an engineering buddy from the team who assists with more complex and technical tasks we undertake. Overall, support and training was very comprehensive.
As part of the graduate programme we attend many professional development courses over the two years. This works on behavioural skills such as preparing for interviews, dealing with conflict, presentation skills. Technical skills during my placement is developing my power system knowledge, learning how to use modelling and coding softwares.
