There is clearly outlined pay progression that can not be exceeded while in the program. However, I have the opportunity to work across different teams in the company which helps to develop well-rounded knowledge of the water industry. As a graduate, the teams are decided between myself and my graduate manager and are catered to my developmental goals and career aspirations. There is the possibility leave the graduate program early and apply for a full time role. However, there is a lot of value in staying in the program which people find more important than the pay increase.
This role has given me amazing exposure to the Water Industry in NZ and ideas as to what pathways I might want to take moving forward.
In my current graduate role I have the opportunity to move around to three different teams over the course of two years. Within this I will be exposed to all kinds of different work, people and experiences. I will tackle different issues and gain many skills and knowledge. Our employer also provides many opportunities for growth, through random fitness activities, or the ability to attend or speak at conferences, Watercare encourages us to participate and go beyond.
There are good opportunities for growth, with salary increases every six months, which helps with motivation. Career progression depends on performance, willingness to take on new challenges, and continuous learning. Watercare also provides various training and development programs to support career aspirations. There’s a clear pathway for those who want to move up, and managers are supportive in helping grads achieve their goals
Candidates who pass through this program have the potential to feel uncertain about their career prospects as future employment depends on the availability of roles at the point in time when you finish your 2 years as a graduate.
