Based on my experience, Xero's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not a separate activity but is woven into the company's culture and purpose. It's demonstrated through community support, innovation projects, and a strong focus on employee well-being. Community Empowerment and Alternative Pathways A key social initiative I have personally benefited from is the Take2 program. This program is designed to create equitable access to technology careers for individuals from non traditional backgrounds. I have had the privilege of being mentored by a colleague from the Take2 program, and I have also had the opportunity to 'pay it forward' by sharing my own experiences and offering support to the newest cohort. This demonstrates a genuine commitment to building a diverse talent pipeline and supporting the community. Innovation for Customer and Community Benefit I have been directly involved in projects that, while technical in nature, have a clear benefit for our customers. I participated in a Machine Learning (ML) annotation project aimed at refining AI-driven customer support. The goal was to make our technology more helpful and intuitive, directly improving the experience for small business owners. Additionally, our regular hackathons encourage innovation that often has a community focus. These events empower teams to explore new technologies, like using Large Language Models (LLMs) to simplify complex data analysis, with the long-term goal of developing tools that make business easier for our customers. Fostering an Inclusive Internal Community Internally, our CSR is reflected in a strong culture of knowledge sharing and inclusion. I have actively contributed to this by writing and publishing an internal blog post for other graduates, distilling key learnings from my rotation to help support their development journey. Furthermore, my participation in Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) shows a company wide commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can bring their whole self to work.
Xero seems to have a good commitment to CSR across all of its offices globally. In NZ, te ao Māori is acknowledged and included in the office spaces with te reo Māori visibility with some physical materials and use online. Sustainability efforts are made with recycling and composting although some more transparency on this and further efforts would be great to see
