#2 of 14 in Chemical Process Engineering
I am a Generalist Graduate at Z, which means my role can change depending on the team I am working in at any given time. During the two-year programme, we rotate through a number of different teams and business units across the company. This includes shorter, structured rotations in our first year, followed by longer six-month rotations of our choosing in the second year. As a result, the day-to-day work can vary significantly, ranging from routine, process-driven tasks to large-scale strategic projects that can take weeks or even months to complete. This can also mean sometimes you feel very busy and sometimes you might not have much to do. It just completely depends on what team you are in at the time.
I've had the opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of tasks and projects across multiple teams. One of the most rewarding aspects of the graduate programme is that you're not just observing you are trusted to make meaningful contributions from the beginning. This level of responsibility has accelerated my learning and helped me develop both my technical and professional skills. I've had the chance to work on complex projects as well as deliver smaller projects from start to finish. It's been motivating to see how my work contributes to team objectives and the wider business. The variety of work has also exposed me to different parts of the business, allowing me to build new skills, work with a range of stakeholders, and gain a broader understanding of how Z Energy operates. Overall, the work has been challenging, meaningful, and has provided an excellent foundation.
This graduate programme is mostly about the different learning opportunities in place, all designed to give a general overview to identify any interests in particular business units. Many of the day-to-day tasks involve meeting with different people about what they do and if there are any tasks that we can do for them, whether that is forecast analysis, creating presentations for meetings, or spending time at the retail sites to get an understanding of the consumers, there are a range of tasks that enable you to get a deeper understanding of the role, the team, and the wider organisation.
