From what I have gathered as an intern, it's pretty easy to move up the corporate ladder of Unilever for the following reasons. First, since it is a very demanding and work-intense company, some people employ themselves here for mere training to prepare themselves in different businesses with a duration of 5 to 10 years. Because of that mindset on leaving the company, there would be job openings available to fill in. Second, when an employee performs exceptionally well, sometimes executives create new job roles to fit the description of that employee. And third, if you get in to their management training program, that's a fast track towards faster vertical movement inside the company.
