It feels like there is a good culture of progression at DEECA, with opportunities to act in higher responsibilities often leading to people successfully applying to more senior roles. At the moment, given State budgetary constraints and political pressure to reduce public spending, even when this reduces efficiency, there is a downward pressure as people are taking pay cuts and roles with lower responsibility because of cuts to senior positions.
VPS is pretty clear about how promotion works I think. The grad program provides a lot of opportunity to network into roles after the program I reckon.
There is some uncertainty within the Graduate Program as the two year position is fixed term without the certainty of an ongoing position. I do feel supported by colleagues and the talent management team to find an ongoing position but the lack of guarantee can be unsettling.
There is significant career progression within the public service and opportunities for secondments and upward progression are encouraged at all career stages. Regular restructures do create quite a challenging environment to navigate when searching for career progression.
