Lots and lots of good training opportunities as a grad, but I can feel these drying up as budget constraints pinch. Not much open communication on this which is disappointing but it's clearly a reality.
Shadowing people within other teams, time and access to watch online lectures and learn knowledge, ability to go to seminars/forums to hear from leading experts, L&D budget, flexibility to explore experiences outside my BAU, time to teach myself new skills (GIS, writing, planning, project management)
All graduates have a lot of flexibility within their roles to attended all training and development opportunities they wish to. Graduates also receive a learning and development budget to attend a range of training's/ conferences relevant to their development.
Due to changes in the structure of the Graduate program it appears that training opportunities provided by the program appear to be significantly reduced from previous years. This trend may continue due to the tight fiscal environment. Learning and development budget has provided the opportunity to explore a large variety of training external to the department that has allowed me to develop critical career skills for working in the public service. On the job training has also been fantastic with teams being incredibly supportive to introduce you to complex challenges and problems.
