Promotions are less tenure based and more performance / ability based than other places which I like. There is no strict minimum time requirements. If you are a high performer, you can be promoted up to 2x as fast as below avg performers. Downside of a small firm is that you often get less choice in the project that you do - you may be forced to do projects you don't enjoy or see yourself doing because the firm doesn't have other resources to staff on it.
