Career development opportunities can vary depending on the team you work in and the type of work you're involved with. In my experience, taking on additional responsibilities has been highly encouraged, which has helped me develop new skills and gain exposure.
As a Queensland Government there are many avenues for additional training, as well as the opportunity to apply in a multitude of varying roles to advance your career.
I've only been with the department for almost six months, so it's still relatively early for me to comment. During that time, I've learned several new skills that are relevant to my career and have gained some experience. That said, I was hoping for more hands-on technical experience in my field to better prepare me for my next role. They were upfront from the start that there weren't many opportunities to progress within the department. They explained that ongoing employment beyond my current role is not guaranteed. I appreciated their honesty, as it allowed me to set realistic expectations from the beginning.
Within the Queensland Government, there is not always a clearly defined promotion pathway. Career progression often depends on the availability of roles and an individual's willingness to seek out new opportunities. Building professional networks, developing your skills, and staying informed about internal vacancies can help support career growth. While advancement opportunities do exist, employees generally need to take a proactive approach to pursuing them.
