There's always opportunity to move up the ranks. In a grad role, you want to try out different roles and make sure you put your efforts to learn as much as you can while supporting your team.
It's structured in engineering. You need to get your chartership and technical authority approval to be able to move up job grades. They have a very difficult internal promotion system which is unfavourable where they will make you 'acting' in the role and not pay you for the additional responsibilities and require a minimum of 12 months in the role before pay increase. You can also only have one job grade increase at a time. This is a major downside.
Santos has different functions including D&C, subsurface, and facilities. You get hired into one function and are required to stay there for the duration of your graduate program. If you want to get experience in other functions it is very difficult to jump across which can limit your professional development. The graduate program is set up in a very rigid way requiring graduates to get the most experience in the functions there were hired into to then exit the graduate program specialised in your area. Once finished with the graduate program it can be difficult to move up the ranks unless you stand out and managers know you. It can be very easy to stay in the same role and department for a long time.
