There was a structured training program at the beginning of the program. I would have loved more opportunities to do more on-the-job learning, as I learnt a lot when given those opportunities. Very much understand the complexities in offering this when dealing with interns though.
We have a structured training program delivered to all new starters, covering areas such as structured problem solving, communications, and Excel training. There are also self-guided training modules on the more technical side, including PowerPoint and Excel tools. However, the area where I've found myself learning the most is on the job - where you're given the opportunity to demonstrate and push your own thinking to solve complex business problems. Throughout the process, you're supported by managers who genuinely want you to succeed. We are also each assigned a Development Mentor, who you catch up with on a regular basis to discuss how you're tracking along your learning journey. They are incredibly supportive and always provide great advice and direction when needed.
Slide-making, problem-solving, storytelling, client interaction. Regular feedback, mentoring, supportive and approachable environment making it easy to ask questions and learn.
Training was great for us interns, we were taken through all the consultant essentials in a way that felt welcoming and easy to digest. Mentoring structures were strong, and I believe permanent employees had career development mentors or something similar too. Feedback was relevant, robust, and applicable. One thing that was interesting was that the same training was offered to everyone new, regardless of whether they were intern level or manager jumping ship from another firm. Something to consider - possibly tailoring training opportunities.
